Pigmentation Treatments
Unwanted skin pigmentation is a common cosmetic problem in Australia. It is the result of over production of melanin produced by the melanocyte skin cell. There are three main types of pigmentation. The first, and most common, is photo pigmentation resulting from excessive UV rays, or sun exposure. It is this photo damage that causes 90% of aging changes to the skin. Everyone is at risk regardless of skin colour and should use broad spectrum sunscreen every day. The second is post inflammatory hyper pigmentation which is caused by excessive trauma to the skin. It is extremely difficult to treat and attempts often result in further pigmentation. It is seen more commonly in darker skinned individuals. The third type is due to hormonal causes and known as chloasma or melasma. It associated with increased oestrogen states as in the use of the oral contraceptive pill and in pregnancy. Pigmentation may also be congenital (birthmarks), or seen in certain diseases.
The effectiveness of pigmentation treatments depends upon the depth of the pigment. All pigment has a superficial component and thus can be improved by treatments such as chemical peels, medical rollering and lasers. These act to remove layers of the epidermis (top skin layers) and thus lighten the blemish. If pigmentation has a deeper dermal component, as most do, then complete removal of the problem may be impossible as it can risk scarring. In this case, special medical lightening products are used to penetrate into the dermis to fade and prevent further pigment forming. Argera now offers a unique pigment treatment using the known advantages of oxygen to enhance deeper penetration of the dermis layer with these melanin inhibiting substances providing a greater reduction in pigmentation than previously possible with conventional methods. This radical, safe and effective treatment comes complete with appropriate skincare to maintain your results. This is known as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or hyperbaric oxygen facials.
